Summary:
Native American children are highly vulnerable to referrals out of mainstream public education. This study of the transition of Native American children in Southwestern Colorado from a Native American Head Start program to public kindergarten analyzes the factors which contribute to these high referral rates and suggests policy changes to smooth the transition of Native American children into the public school system. Six in-depth case studies, on-site classroom observation, and interviews with parents and teachers, document changes in the social interaction patterns of children between reservation Head Start and public school kindergarten classrooms.
