Biography/History:
African-American contralto born in Philadelphia.
Summary:
Marian Anderson discusses her musical background and training, the establishment of the Marian Anderson Scholarship Fund and the reasons for discontinuing it, the reasons why she never taught singing, characteristics beneficial to a singer's career, her strong religious faith, the importance of knowing the meaning of song texts for singers, and advice regarding the education of musicians. She also answers questions from audience members. Other artists are mentioned, including Pierre Monteux, Fyodor Chaliapin, Amelita Galli-Curci, Jean Sibelius, Hall Johnson, Roland Hayes and Anderson's first teacher, Mary Saunders Patterson. Anderson also offers general comments about performances by three student vocalists.
