- Summary:
- A leather bound datebook used as a diary, account book, and note book, belonging to Ralph Hodgson from Darlington, England. Contains brief records for 1775, 1776, and 1777, plus a number of recipes for "Transparent Varnish," "Oyl Cloth," "One quart of Ink," and numerous medical recipes to treat worms, cough, fever, and cancer. There are a few entries, in a later hand, dated 1845, 1846, 1847. A brief genealogy of Hodgson's family, recording the date of his marriage, and births and deaths of his children is on ff. 58v-59r. He was married in Darlington to Ely Stonehouse in 1778, his first three children were born in England, his fourth child was born and died in New York City, his fifth child was born in New Cornwall, Orange County, New York. Also includes a summary of "Contents of each Vol. of Mr. Wesley's Works containing 32 Vol." The pocket journal contains useful information, table, etc. in print, including: "Holidays and other remarkable Days in 1775;" a table of "Lunations, or of Astronmical New, Full, and Quarter Moons," "Eclipses in 1775;" "A List of all the Fairs, fixed and moveable, in the Counties of York, Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmorland, Lancaster, and in Lincolnshire;" "A List of the Principal Fairs in Scotland;" "A Catalogue of all the Horse Races for legal Prizes..."; information on prices for Glasiers Work, Joiners Work, Plaisterers Work, Bricklayers Work; game rules; list of duties; list of the members of Parliament; tide table at Newcastle Bridge, etc.
