Summary:
Marian Anderson discusses her childhood, early musical experiences, the meaning of spirituals, her first encounter with racism, the advantages of formal musical education, how children are taught racial attitudes, her recollections of Paul Robeson, the response to her performances of spirituals on her international tours, her experience of singing at the shrine to Mahatma Gandhi, the Lincoln Memorial concert of 1939 which came about from the refusal of the D.A.R. to allow her to perform in Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., her views concerning segregation, and some of her basic beliefs about life.
