Summary:
In Into A Wild Sanctuary, Bernie Krause details a lifetime of exploration of both the sounds of humans and the music of the natural wild. Whether playing at Carnegie Hall or facing down a polar bear in Alaska, his life is one of daring, resolve, and intense interest.
An accomplished professional musician, Krause enjoyed an impressive and varied career in which he played guitar with The Weavers, taught George Harrison how to play synthesizer, and worked on the score for "Apocalypse Now". Yet he eventually left the high-powered world of commercial music to record sounds in natural habitats around the world and learn to hear the music of the wild.
Into A Wild Sanctuary not only chronicles his journey from the pop music scene to the jungles of Borneo, but presents a provocative assessment of how the natural world has shaped human music and perceptions. In this book, he puts forth the concept of "biophany" -- the idea that each species takes over particular frequencies at which it communicates, that these frequencies constitute a kind of territory, and that healthy environments are richer when the territory is filled with a wide range of sounds. In turn, he also details the impact humans have had on natural environments, and how noise pollution may be one of the most devastating threats to the wild.
This book is truly remarkable, not only for its unflinchingly honest portrayal of one man's struggle to find satisfaction and peace within himself, but also for its passionate advocacy of the natural wild and its sounds.
