Summary:
Stone building materials, construction and associated component systems: their decay and treatment This volume of English Heritage??'s Research Transactions is devoted to investigative work on the repair and conservation of historic stone masonry. Seven papers by current and former staff, consultants and contractors, divide themselves into three sections (research, development and case studies) and into two distinct classes of work, both concerned with the retention and extension of historic masonry??'s life. The first set focus on systems of protection, through the use of organic and inorganic masonry consolidants; through wax defenses in sacrificial graffiti barriers; and through the employment of soft wall cappings. The second set deal with keyhole or microsurgery techniques in situations where the large scale and costly replacement of historic fabric would otherwise be necessary. The study will be of particular interest to architectural conservators.
