"The Freudian Calling" traces the evolution of an early psychoanalytic science of culture by examining how the work of cultural interpretation became essential to the Freudian movement in Vienna in the years before the First World War. Louis Rose explores Freud's writings on art, society, and history in light of the discussions and projects of his Viennese circle. During these years, while constructing his own theory of civilization, Freud fulfilled and deepened the Viennese aspiration toward new cultural and psychological understandings.

The followers of this early movement, which included medical practitioners, writers, and critics, sought not only to transform psychological science, but to construct a new cultural theory. "The Freudian Calling" emphasizes the prepsychoanalytic work of these early Viennese followers, and, unlike previous studies, draws attention to their connections with a small circle of moral enrages, whose cultural criticism inspired the Freudians' original sense of calling and brought a vanguard vision into the Freudian movement.

Drawing on the history of psychoanalytic cultural science in Vienna, "The Freudian Calling" reexamines the development of Freud's own thought, from his biography of Leonardo da Vinci and the study of Michelangelo's Moses to the writing of Totem and Taboo and, finally, Civilization and Its Discontents.

By exploring the origins the Viennese psychoanalysts' sense of calling in their careers and examining their project for a new cultural science, "The Freudian Calling" reconsiders the role of Vienna as the origin of the Freudian movement. Further, it provides a new perspective on Freud's own work and identifies the survival of a moralimpetus within a modern, psychological approach to culture.
