Summary:
This is the first dictionary to identify, chart, and explain in context the many proper names and place names that enrich the poetry of William Butler Yeats and anchor that poetry to Ireland. In this guide, Lester I. Conner reveals the extraordinary depth of meaning in Yeats's work by identifying and elucidating its many geographical, historical, mythological, and literary references. He does this by including biographical information and useful cross-references to the poet's other works, unveiling sources that contribute to, among other aspects, the richness of the poet's most memorable characters - such as Anashuya, Crazy Jane, or Red Hanrahan. He provides etymological guides to the accepted spelling of Irish proper names and place names that Yeats favored, names that the poet often used in a very personal context, giving his work the strong sense of place for which it is noted.
