Summary:
Public schools and higher education institutions have tended to function as though they had little in common. In the policy arena, especially, they have often pursued separate agendas. This is the first volume to fully explore ways that public schools and higher education institutions might form more sustainable ties -- in teacher education, in research, policy, and program development, and in assuring access to higher education. The primary purpose of the volume is to help define what schools and colleges need flora each other, and the extent to which higher education can and should change to meet the needs of school reform. Topics discussed include: l) a historical perspective on the connections between the two institutions, 2) analysis of roadblocks to productive interaction, 3) the role of higher education in advancing school reforms; and 4) new models for a coordinated education policy. Sponsored by the Pew Forum on Education Reform, the book features contributions by well-known leaders in higher education, teacher education, school reform, and education policy.
