Summary:
The "new migration" in Europe is characterized by increasing numbers, changing profiles, feminization and new geographical patterns. But the "new migration" bears a significance which outweighs these empirical changes alone. This book proceeds from the assumption that the "new migration" is more than a label, and regards it as a social concept. Its contributions elaborate three research strategies: placing the new migration in historical context; investigating how the concept is socially constructed; and revealing the social realities of the new migration. Case studies are taken from throughout Europe and focus on themes including identity, vulnerability and resistance.
