Summary:
Of all the actions fought on India's Northwest Frontier (today's Afghanistan and Pakistan), the campaign of 1897 was the most threatening to the British Empire. A widespread alliance of Frontier tribes overran numerous British outposts and even occupied the fabled Khyber Pass itself. India was directly threatened and Britain's international prestige suffered.
Michael Barthorpe, a foremost authority on the British Army and it's uniforms, chronicles the year-long campaign to regain the Khyber Pass. A series of color plates presents the most accurate depiction, based on the most recent research, of the uniforms of the various participants.
