- Summary:
- While his reputation remains controversial, there is little dispute regarding the enormous influence and continuing relevance of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900). However, much of what has been written about him revolves around his status as the iconoclastic philosopher of nihilism, or the thinker who went "beyond good and evil", generally taken to constitute the essence of his philosophy. Yet two-thirds of Nietzsche's finished works (those preceding Thus Spoke Zarathustra) contain no references to these doctrines. Rejecting the view that Nietzsche's earlier writings are significant only in relation to his "mature" philosophy, Quentin Taylor has written a full-length study of Nietzsche's early thought, the first of its kind. Drawing on a diffuse body of writings, Dr. Taylor adeptly "reconstructs" the principal outlines of Nietzsche's early philosophy, with an emphasis on its positive and constructive dimensions.
