- Summary:
- American Immigrant Cultures: Builders of a Nation is a two-volume reference work covering nonindigenous cultural groups currently living in the United States. It is an indispensable resource on 164 immigrant cultures that thoroughly addresses important issues and questions concerning the history of American immigration.
- American Immigrant Cultures discusses the unique cultural attributes of each immigrant group. Variation within the group and patterns across the group are also addressed in each article. The articles examine those cultural facets unique to different populations -- including music, food, language, and dress -- methods of assimilation into the mainstream American population, relations with other groups, pan-ethnic ties, internal variations, and transnational ties. The entries depict the degree and types of discrimination experienced by each group in the past and present. Detailed appendices also provide demographic statistics and information on holidays and religious observances. Photographs throughout bring to life the many diverse cultures.
