- In this wide-ranging book, Julian Wolfreys offers close readings of films, novels and poetry in order to draw attention to the ways in which texts appear to resist acts of reading by seemingly performing their own idiomatic, resistant and wayward identities. This study proposes a new understanding of dissonant identity through theoretically informed acts of interpretation which draw on texts of Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Emmanuel Levinas, and Martin Heidegger, along with other major 20th-century thinkers. Looking at the construction of identity in the work of Lewis Carroll, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, James Joyce, Sylvie Germain, Jacques Derrida, Michel Deguy, George Eliot and the avant-garde film work of Maya Deren, Wolfreys asks the reader to reassess textual performances through a theoretically informed analysis of a radical rhetoric of identity which is simultaneously both resistant to mastery and affirmative of dissonance.
