The story opens when a murderer who's been discharged from a hospital for the criminally insane rapes and kills a beautiful young woman in her Manhattan apartment, leaving behind clues that point to Detective Ben Tolliver as the killer. To Ben's horror, he realizes he knows the victim - and thinks he may know the identity of the murderer as well. What he does not realize is that he himself is the target of the twisted genius he apprehended in another murder case a decade earlier. What ensues is a head-to-head contest of winner-takes-all, loser-dies, as cop and killer engage in a deadly duel of wits, with the killer way ahead. First prosecutors, then the media, and finally even his superiors in the NYPD come to believe Tolliver guilty.
