- Summary:
- Katharina Pollaczek, a young woman of Slav origin, returns to the Italian city of her youth to fight for the custody of her young son. Morandini's narrative charts Katharina's wanderings through the beautiful but decaying streets of this once-great city which is never explicitly named but is clearly recognizable as Trieste: a city where casual encounters highlight the pain and difficulty of communication, and where she must continually re-examine her past in the context of the present and the future. Her chance arrival at the scene of the murder of a young Serbian woman forces Katharina to contemplate the tragedy of ethnic tension and the crisis of conscience which characterizes in entire generation. First published in Italy in 1983, The Cafe of Mirrors is a powerful novel which deftly balances the inner perspectives of a young woman with the physical landscapes - and the social and moral climates - of a volatile border city.
