Katharina Pollaczek, a young woman of Slav origin, returns to the Italian city of her youth to fight for the custody of her young son. Morandini's narrative charts Katharina's wanderings through the beautiful but decaying streets of this once-great city which is never explicitly named but is clearly recognizable as Trieste: a city where casual encounters highlight the pain and difficulty of communication, and where she must continually re-examine her past in the context of the present and the future.
