Summary:
This volume appears at a critical moment for the future of cultural studies. The Anglo-American centres from which cultural studies first emerged have been displaced, and we are left with a series of urgent questions: Can cultural studies retain a singular identity? Can it legitimately speak in the language of the global or should it develop greater expertise in the field of the local? Should cultural studies disperse itself or can it now find a comfortable place for itself in the arena of international scholarship as it embraces the limits of thinking within a national frame? This collection re-asserts the importance of analysing concrete social practices as the basis for understanding the dynamics of broad cultural change.
