Summary:
Sex and sexuality have become significant themes of public debate in China. After decades in which sexuality was hidden from public view, it is now easily accessible in an array of forms, from fashion magazines to statistical surveys. Yet while female sexuality has emerged as an object of public interest, it remains bound within assumptions about women's sexual conduct which have been the main criteria of female sexual morality in both East and West.
In her groundbreaking Women and Sexuality in China, Harriet Evans explores the changing identities of women and sexuality in Communist China -- from the 1950s expressions of an idealized "woman" at the service of the state through to today, where the Party/state administration no longer controls all sexual activity, and where writing about women's sexual needs takes place alongside stories about the abduction and sale of women into marriage. Evans examines, particularly, changes after the Cultural Revolution, placing the full compass of sexual issues in the context of how the Chinese understand gender.
As Evans notes, China is experiencing great changes. The rise of prostitution, female infanticide, reproductive health issues, and the bombardment of sexual images all ask whether the changes in representation of female sexuality indicate the emergence of a woman's voice or another form of the old stereotypes.
