Summary:
The truly popular proverb in Spanish is the refran. In contrast to the proverbio and the maxima, the refran makes no attempt to teach any sort of lesson -- if a lesson results, it is purely coincidental. Cobos presents the proverbs of the Spanish-speaking people of New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, and California in their original Spanish and with English translations.
