Summary:
Gustav Peichl belongs to that group of internationally known Austrian architects "who have helped to shape the Austrian self-understanding" (Freidrich Achleitner). Perhaps his best-known work is the broadcasting studio for ORF, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. Peichl, situated between tradition and the avantgarde, is a representative of technical-aesthetic architecture in the spirit of Classical Modernism. Peichl has never gone along with the fashions, neither Post-Modernism nor Deconstruction. Peichl cannot be categorized, for he pursues an independent line and unifies in his works technical aesthetics, classical proportions, wit, and sensuousness. He describes his architecture as "the sum of function, material, color, light, space and volume". His "architecture with physiognomy", from the ORF buildings in 1970 to the German Federal Art Museum in 1990, represents the continuous expansion and extension of his ideas of form. This new collection of his works contains recent, in some cases hitherto unpublished projects such as Vienna Donauzwilling, the rehearsal stage for the Vienna Burgtheater, the European Film Center in Babelsberg, or the Munchener Kammerspiele. His most recent projects, the Wilhelm Busch Museum in Hanover and the Palazzo Tergesteo a Mare in Triest, are presented in detail in floor plans, models and drawings.
