- Summary:
- The works of the Catalan Santiago Calatrava defy classification. Sculpture, architecture, engineering - all are combined in his unique structures. In fact, Calatrava is known worldwide for his synthesis of the disciplines. This volume reproduces his "secret sketchbook" - written and illustrated in January and February 1995 - which provides insights into his work and into the nature of the relationships between art, architecture, and engineering. The sketchbook is a retrospective exploration of the analogies within and connections between Calatrava's buildings and projects. A wealth of material - on the elements, on human anatomy, on natural and physical forces, on works of art - traces Calatrava's oeuvre, unencumbered by time, place, or function. Explanatory notes link the images on each page to particular projects; among the more than twenty-five included are Calatrava's spectacular bridges (those for the Barcelona Olympics and Seville World Expo), movable structures (like the 1993 sculpture for New York's Museum of Modern Art), railway stations, roof coverings, and telecommunications towers.
