Edward Newton on front pastedown; gold-stamped oval black leather bookplate ("EX LIBRIS R.B. ADAM") illustrated with portrait of Samuel Johnson on front pastedown. Volume 1 has 2 printed paper slips with bookseller's descriptions of other copies of this edition and 2 printed paper slips of quotations from and about Samuel Johnson affixed to front pasetdown; clipping with review of "Johnson's dictionary, a modern selection" headlined "The harmless drudge" (Time, 29 March 1963) and 2 clippings (pasted back to back) from 16 December 1887 and not before 24th December 1887 from an unidentified publication, both titled "What will free trade in America do for England?" (one signed: Fiat Justitia Ruat Coelum; the other signed: Geo. Heap, Hon. Sec. Association for the Preservation of Agriculture, &c.) laid in. Volume 2 has wormhole in fore-edge margin of leaves pi1-19H1.
