- Summary:
- Sterne's methodology was not, obviously, organic masterworks of theological originality, such as Tillotson or Robert South or Joseph Butler produced, but incremental structures with interchangeable parts, many of which had been tried and tested, either by Sterne himself or by the author from whom he was borrowing. A typical sermon is composed of elements written at earlier times and recomposed for the present sermon, with, of course, the quite possible addition of new material.
