- Summary:
- Regents and trustees must uphold the highest ethical standards, or taxpayers and students will lose confidence in higher education. This slim volume, which includes ethics cases in six key areas of university governance, was written to fill a void in literature available to members of governing boards of colleges and universities. It also will serve as a review of ethics and governance issues for other members of the university community.
- The carefully constructed cases (used in Oklahoma's Regents Education Program) are more than entertaining stories of moral ambiguity. The cases are invitations to think more deeply and get to the heart of controversial issues that divide Americans concerned about higher education. Alexander B. Holmes observes that "ethical behavior is like morals; it cannot be legislated". Yet he covers all the bases in chapters on the sources of a regent's power, a taxonomy of ethical issues, financial conflicts ("The Case of the Friendly Vendor"), academic conflicts ("The Case of the Helpful Regent"), personnel ("The Case of the Proud Father"), the student press ("The Case of the Amateur Editor"), athletics ("The Case of the Ardent Booster"), and campus organizations ("The Case of the Outraged Regent").
