Summary:
Using a pragmatic, reader-oriented approach and informed by contemporary theory of metaphor and related topics, Katheryn Darr examines the meaning and functions of child and female imagery for readers of the Isaiah scroll in its entirety. Having identified the associated commonplaces surrounding such figures of speech -- a necessary task for competently construing the metaphysical language of another society and culture -- she turns specifically to the imagery of the rebellious child and personfied city (and nation). Tracing these tropes from Isaiah's first chapter to its last, Darr discloses how the literary work, through a variety of rhetorical strategies, urges readers to align themselves with "those in (Zion) who repent" (1:27) -- that is, Yahweh's "servants" -- while distancing themselves from those leaders who perpetuate Israel's history of rebellion. The intended reader of the text recognizes the folly of obduracy, repents, embraces obedience to Yahweh's Torah, and awaits both the ultimate punishment of sinners and the new creation lying just on Yahweh's horizon.
