Summary:
Extensive and far-reaching, Interaction Between Parents and Children offers an interdisciplinary integration of recent Western research on parent-child interaction in the "traditional family structure." This interdisciplinary approach illustrates the rich and often surprising amount of convergence among disciplines as well as the methods to breach methodological boundaries. To answer the question "who affects whom" in the parent-child dyad and family system, this material is approached utilizing three different views of Peterson and Rollins' framework: unidirectional, bidirectional, and systemic. Child variables such as self-control, self-concept, and communication competencies--language and communication--are also examined in this concise and readable volume. Stafford and Bayer close with a recap of the three different views within the framework and identify concerns about and limitations of the present literature.
