- Summary:
- This book reflects the vast range of responses and cultural approaches to a unique architectural challenge - the designing of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), a sprawling cultural complex that will cover a 10-hectare site in New Delhi. To be built in three phases, the Centre will comprise independent units to serve the needs of research, documentation, display and the performing arts. The international competition for the IGNCA design drew 194 entries from 37 countries and carried an award of Rs. 1,000,000. Presented here are approximately 50 of the proposals, of which the first five prize-wining entries are set forth in some detail. The selection was made by the eminent architect A.P. Kanvinde, a former student of Walters Gropius at Harvard and a member of the IGNCA jury. His choice was governed by such factors as the proposal's validity within the given programme and site conditions, the freshness of response to the brief and the elegance of approach either as a whole or in part. Beyond the purpose of documentation, this book serves as an encyclopaedia of ideas and information for architects and builders throughout the world. A preface describes the programme and critically analyses the overall nature of the entries. Drawings and photographs of models accompany text explaining and commenting on the special qualities of each proposal.
