Summary:

This book brings together a group of formative essays on theories of gender difference. Using psychoanalytical, linguistic, literary, sociohistorical and political approaches, the essays address a series of central themes: mother-daughter relationships; differences in feminism between America and France; differences in language between male and female in speech and literary productions; women's experimental theater; black women in history, literature, and feminism; androgyny and the psychology of sex differences; lesbianism and the social functions of taboos; women's concepts of themselves and their morality; and women in power and politics. The book's introduction traces the evolution of the theme of 'difference' in late-twentieth -century feminism, not only between males and females, but between women and among feminists.
