- Archer states that unlike his contemporary Thomas Hunt, "Robinson, by contrast tried to adapt different regional and historical styles to his own particularly painterly conception of architectural design, based on the picturesque theories of Sir Uvedale Price. In 'Designs for ornamental villas,' Robinson offered 16 designs .... The range of styles represented perhaps was the most eclectic in British architectural literature to date: Swiss, Greek, Palladian, Old English, Castellated, 'Ancient Manor House,' Modern Italian, Anglo-Norman, Decorated (Gothic), Elizabethan, 'ancient timber building,' and Tuscan."--Archer, p. 739.
- First issued 1825-1827; in this edition the scenic views are redrawn by J.D. Harding.
- Designs are illustrated in plan, elevation and scenic views within a well composed landscape setting, exemplifying Robinson's belief in the unity of landscape and architectural design. Cf. Archer.
