- Summary:
- The tremendous changes in the role and significance of religion during the Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation affected all of society. However, there have been few attempts to examine medicine and its ideologicl underpinnings within the context of the period, and how it was affected. "Medicine and the Reformation" charts how both popular and official religion affected orthodox medicine, as well as more popular, or "folk" healers. Illustrating the central part played by medicine in Lutheran teachings, the Calvinists' rationalization of disease, and Catholic responses, the contributors to this volume offer perspectives on the relation of religion and medicine in the early modern period.
