- Summary:
- Walker uses the HIV virus, its characteristics and our perceptions of it as the foundation for his morally neutral analysis of the AIDS epidemic. He sees the character of the epidemic as a function of the virus, thus integrating politics, economics, avoidance and scientific research with the biology of HIV. He presents his personal experience with AIDS patients and deals with the linguistic usages and metaphors applied to AIDS and their consequent policy significance; the impact of the epidemic on those engaged in researching cures and treatments; behavioural impact on individuals seeking to avoid AIDS; avoidance strategy and risk assessment; and economic and political impacts through the Ryan White Act of 1990. Of particular interest is the historical-epidemiological comparison of the bubonic plague and the AIDS epidemic. ISBN 0-391-03719-6 : $29.95.
