Printer statement from verso of title leaf. "Later editions have the imprint of Henderson, Rait AND SPALDING. (Spalding was a lithographer who joined the firm later.)"--Searle.
"In the first edition, the Duet--Patience and Angela--has two verses. In subsequent editions the second verse was omitted, also some dialogue on p. 16, etc. As there was an immediate outcry against the song, 'Silvered is the raven hair' ... [s]lips announcing 'In the twilight of our love' were inserted in the second edition, while later issues contained an inset with the words of the new song."--Searle.
Binding: "[L]ight grey paper covers, lettered as title-page, but in different types and adding 'E.C.' after 'Poultry,' omitting 'Authors of, etc.', and names of Author and Composer on separate lines. The whole within a heavy rule gothic border with 'PRICE ONE SHILLING' on either side and at foot, without the ruled border. The covers have the following advts.:--p. 2 'Pirates of Penzance,' p. 3 'Olivette,' p. 4 'Martyr of Antioch' and 'Trial by Jury.'"--Searle.
