- Summary:
- Simon follows Rothenberg from her childhood in Buffalo, New York, where she first studied art and dance, through her experiences and experiments during college and her early years in New York City, where she flourished in the performance-oriented, conceptual atmosphere of the late 1960s and the vibrant, interdisciplinary milieu of the nascent SoHo scene of the early 1970s. The author chronicles Rothenberg's first critical acclaim as a painter in the mid 1970s, the evolution of her increasingly enigmatic art in the 1980s, and her surprising new images, with which she begins the 1990s in New Mexico. The artist herself supplies valuable insight into her working methods through interviews with Simon and others.
