Ricorur's argument has four parts: the examination of language as discourse; the adjustment needed in order to focus on written discourse as distinct from spoken; a theory of text-this part takes up the contributing factors of the polysemy of words and the ambiguity of sentences in order to confront the problem of plurivocity on full works such as poems and essays and; the culmination of textual theory of interpretation, which is a dialectic of explanation and understanding.
