Summary:
Anybody who has published more than forty books and nearly 2,000 articles and who has been called "the greatest evangelical scholar of our time" is a figure to be reckoned with. Such is F. F. Bruce, who towers like a giant over the field of contemporary biblical scholarship.
Here, in his final work, Bruce has collected (and updated where necessary) eighteen of his lectures or essays related to fields of study that have particularly attracted him during the past half century.
Some of the essays, such as "The Humanity of Jesus Christ," "Women in the Church," and "The Bible and the Faith," are of general interest. They show Bruce to be a man of faith who follows the evidence where it leads, who listens carefully to the Spirit speaking today as well as in the past, and who makes independent judgments with a free spirit.
Because Bruce started his career as a classical scholar and then turned to biblical criticism and exegesis, most of the essays in this volume are naturally devoted to specialist or semispecialist interests. Several essays deal with issues raised by Bruce's study of the Pauline epistles and the Acts of the Apostles; other chapters discuss topics in early Judaism.
Readers will appreciate Professor Bruce's thorough and painstaking research, his clarity in treating complex themes, and his firm commitment to the truth of the gospel and to biblical Christianity -- to what really matters.
