- Helen McCracken Fulcher was daughter of Josiah C. McCracken, a medical graduate of Class 1901 of the University of Pennsylvania who spent nearly forty years as a medical missionary in China and served as dean of the St. John's Medical School, Shanghai, from 1914 to 1947.

- This paper is an account of the experience of the McCrackens in China from 1907 when the Christian Association of the University of Pennsylvania first sent Josiah C. McCracken to head a medical mission in Canton, China, to 1942 when McCracken was expatriated by the Japanese shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack.
