- This journal of general literature was based on the essays prepared by various members of a New York City gentleman's club which met for weekly discussions. A great variety of subjects were discussed and written about including philosophy, fashion, poetry, short stories, superstition and popular culture. The essays were usually five to ten pages long, though were sometimes quite extensive. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
