"First published 1985."
"The 'Primer' is divided into two parts, preceded by Biographical Notes. Part I is almost exclusively visual. It opens with an extended selection of photographs ... of what remains Finlay's prime achievement - the Garden and Temple at Little Sparta, Stonypath in southern Scotland ... Part II of the book consists of an illustrated essay built round a number or more or less familiar notions: aura, citation, rhetoric, metaphor, image and allegory, the sublime ... It touches on Finlay's relationship with different art forms (sculpture, photography, portrait painting, etc.) and aesthetic movements (cubism, dada, neoclassicism, the idea of the avant-garde)."
Includes bibliographical references (pages 242-245) and index.
