The genuineness of the collection has been questioned by several authorities (Lowndes, Barbier, Vacant et Mangenot, etc.) the authorship being attributed to L. A. de Caraccioli. That it is in substance a genuine collection, though some of the letters are spurious, is affirmed by Alfred von Reumont in his "Ganganelli ... seine briefe und seine zeit. 1847." cf. also Encycl. Brit.
