Physicist, educator author; B.A. and Ph.D., U. of Pennsylvania, (1903, 1914); faculty, Dept. of Physics, U. of Pennsylvania (1906-1952); his research concerned principally mechanics, acoustics and history of science; recognized for his writings on the scientific and technological careers of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon and on the survey of the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland (1763-1767).
