Biography/History:
Edward B. Shils graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in economics in 1936, an M.A. in 1937 and a Ph.D. in political science in 1940. He joined the faculty of the University in 1956. He was professor of entrepreneurial studies and served as director of the Sol C. Snider Entrepreneurial Center of the Wharton School of Penn. His other experiences included serving as arbitrator for Pennsylvania state police and as consultant to Small Business Administration of the United States (1957-1958). He was honored with the title of L.L.D. in 1976 and the title of Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1986. He retired in 1985.
Summary:
Shils reviewed the fifty years he had spent at the University of Pennsylvania, first as a student, then as a teacher, and finally as an administrator. He highlighted such points as compulsory physical education when he was a student, the impact of Depression on the prospect of business majors, women status at the Wharton School, student dorms, the success of a Wharton student named Saul Steinberg, and his experiences with the Veteran Administration, with the Entrepreneurial Center of Wharton School, and as City Counsel.
