Biography/History:

Harold G. Scheie graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B. S. in 1931 and an M.D. in 1935. He received his Doctorate of Medical Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1940. He interned at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1935 to 1937, and served as a resident in the department of ophthalmology at HUP from 1937 to 1940. During World War II, he was a member of HUP's 20th General Hospital in Assam and won high praise and the order of the British Empire. In his term as chairman of the department of ophthalmology at HUP, he founded the Scheie Eye Institute and served as its director from 1972 to 1977. He was member of the National Committee of Medical International Cooperative, member of the National Advisory Committee of the Eye Bank for Sight Restoration, and member of the American College of Surgeons and American Ophthalmology Society.

Summary:

Scheie related the reasons for choosing ophthalmology as his specialty, discussed the reputation of the University of Pennsylvania and the faculty at the University hospital, and recalled such things as his internship and residency program at the hospital, and his relationship with British general Mountbatten in World War II.
