Biography/History:
Israel B. Bender was born in Russia in 1905. He came to the United States in 1926 and graduated from the dental school of the University of Pennsylvania in 1930. Bender joined the faculty of the University in 1942. He served as president of the Philadelphia Endodontic Society from 1954 to 1956 and as chairman of the Research Committee of the American Association of Endodontists from 1955 to 1957. He was appointed to head the department of dentistry at the Albert Einstein Medical Center (Northern Division) in 1963. In 1977, the I.B. Bender Seminar in "pulp biology" was established as a tribute to his contributions in the field. He is now professor emeritus of endodontics of the University of Pennsylvania.
Summary:
Israel Bender recalled how he entered and worked his way through the dental school of the University of Pennsylvania and gave his impressions of the University faculty members when he was a student. He also discussed his research in periodontics and his experience of teaching at the University.
