- Biography/History:
- Jonathan Evans Rhoads graduated from Haverford College with a B.A. in 1928, from Johns Hopkins medical school with an M.D. in 1932 and from the University of Pennsylvania with a doctorate of medical science in 1940. He served as provost of the University of Pennsylvania from 1956 to 1959, as chairman of the Surgery Department of the medical school of Penn from 1959 to 1972, and as director of the department of surgery of the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia from 1972 to 1974. Rhoads was conferred the title of L.L.D by the University in 1960. His other experiences include holding the offices of president of the American Philosophical Society (1976-1983), president of the American College of Surgeons, president of American Cancer Society, and honorary fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1971).

Rhoads recalled his experience as a medical student at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania, related his family background, and discussed important aspects of his professional career, such as surgery at the University hospital (HUP), teaching and administrative work at the medical school, and services as University Provost and as chairman of the University Senate.
