- Biography/History:
- Robert E. Davies was born in England in 1919. He obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Manchester in 1941, and his Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield in 1949. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1955. He was professor of biochemistry from 1955 to 1970 and was named Benjamin Franklin Professor of molecular biology in 1977. He served as Chairman of the graduate group of molecular biology, 1962-1971; as chairman of the Department of Animal Biology of the School of Veterinary Medicine of Penn, 1962-1973; and as chairman of Faculty Senate, 1989-1990. Davies was fellow of Royal Society; and member of American Chemistry Society and of the American Society of Biological Chemists.

- Robert Davies recalled his experience as a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania since 1955. He discussed the difference between students in England and students in America, the "half-mast flag" controversy during the Vietnam War period, minority problems, malpractice suits in the veterinarian school, and the possibility of "extraterrestrial life."
