Biography/History:
Edmund N. Bacon graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor degree in architecture in 1932. He served as an architectural designer in Shanghai, China in 1934, and as managing director of the Philadelphia Housing Association, 1940-1943. He held the office of city planner and executive director of the Philadelphia Planning Commission for two decades. He became adjunct professor of the University of Pennsylvania in 1950 and held that position until 1987. He won an honorary degree in fine arts in 1984.
Summary:
Bacon recalled his experience at Cornell University; his work in Shanghai, China; his experience in Flint, Michigan; and his service with the Philadelphia Housing Commission and City Planning Commission. He also discussed the development of the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, the architectural education and teaching methods at the University, and his memory of Louis Kahn and the Market East project in Philadelphia.
