- Biography/History:
- Francis C. Wood was born in South Africa in 1901. He graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. in 1922 and from the University of Pennsylvania with an M.D. in 1926. He joined the medical faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1928 and served as chairman of the department of medicine from 1947 to 1964. He held the office of president of the medical board of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1961 to 1963. He was member of the American College of Physicians, member of the American Heart Association, and member of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

- Francis Wood reviewed his long career at the University of Pennsylvania beginning with the time when he chose the University for his medical program. He discussed the faculty, the relationship between research and patient care, anecdotes he learned during his internship, and why he chose cardiology as his specialty. Also discussed as the Depression, his participation in the base hospital run by the University faculty in India during WWII, his experience as chief of medicine at the medical school, school buildings, and the issue related to malpractice and insurance.
