Biography/History:

Walter D. Wales graduated from Carleton College with a B.A. in 1954, and obtained both his M.S. (1955) and Ph.D. (1960) from the California Institute of Technology. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1959 and served as Chairman of the Department of Physics from 1973 to 1982. He was appointed Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences in 1982 and held the position until 1991. He also served as associate director of Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator from 1968 to 1971.

Summary:

Walter Wales first recalled how and why he came to join the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania. He then gave opinions on his colleagues at the physics department, looked back upon his research in relation to the Princeton-Pennsylvania accelerator, described the development of the school of arts and sciences at the University, and discussed faculty tenure and the problem of the general quality of education in the country.
