Biography/History:
The Smith Foundation was incorporated in 1920. The founders were W. Hickle Smith and his son Hoxie Harrison Smith, who initiated the application for incorporation in 1919. The mission of the Foundation as set in the charter issued by the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia was to "support benevolent, charitable and education undertakings," which was specified in the 1943 estate of W. Hinckle Smith as to "further secular and religious education among all classes; to care for the sick, the aged and disabled; to minister to the needs of the poor; to improve the physical, mental and moral condition of humanity and generally to advance charitable and benevolent objects."
The Foundation has basically confined its interest to supporting local organizations in Southeastern Pennsylvania. From 1920 to 1980, a total of over three million dollars was contributed to various kinds of organizations for the above-stated purposes. By 1989, the Foundation's asset at market value had grown to over six million U.S. dollars and its giving the same year totaled $364,250.
Summary:
The records of the H.H. Smith Foundation document the development of the organization as well as the scope and range of its charity activities. The Corporate and Board of Directors Records series consists of early history material, bylaws, and formal Board of Directors records from 1928 to 1984. The early material includes two folders which provide valuable information on the initial contributions made by the founder W. Hinckle Smith and the mission he set for the organization. The minute books cover the entire period from 1928 to 1984. The Administration series documents the distribution of grants, communication with dozens of grant-seeking organizations, and administrative and business activities of the Foundation. Correspondence with aid applicants constitutes the bulk of the series.
The Grant Requests and Proposals series consists exclusively of files of organizations that have applied to the Foundation for grants. The corporate applicants fall into the following categories of charity: the aged; the blind, deaf and handicapped; children; education; general; hospitals; miscellaneous; and applicants from areas outside Southeastern Pennsylvania. The Financial series reflects the growth of the foundation and consists of such material as investment transaction statements, journals, ledgers, and tax returns (Form 990 for private foundations). The Miscellaneous series includes a few photographs from some fund-seeking organizations, a register of guests of the Smith family, a seal press of the Foundation for the year 1920.
