Biography/History:

William Proctor Remington attended the Forsythe School and then the Delancey School in Philadelphia. Following his preparatory courses he entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1896 and graduated in 1900 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree. As an undergraduate he served as the Vice President of the Y.M.C.A., editor of "The Pennsylvanian," member of the first Mask and Wig chorus, assistant manager of the football team and a member of the Varsity track team. In 1898, with Josiah C. McCraken, he initiated the University Settlement House which provided social services and vacation activities for indigent children. Remington headed the Track Olympic team in the games held in England and then in France in 1900. After graduating he taught at the Delancey School for a brief period, 1900-1901. Shortly thereafter he attended the Virginia Theological Seminary, graduating with his B.D. in 1905 and his D.D. in 1918. Remington maintained an active career in Episcopal ministry retiring as bishop in 1951.

Summary:

This scrapbook, begun by his mother in 1879, documents the activities of Remington from infancy, through his development as a young boy, to his graduation and participation in the Olympic activities in 1900. Rich detail is provided on his recreational activities of his earlier days, but the focus of the collected materials is on his student activities and performances at the University of Pennsylvania. Remington writes on his trip across the Atlantic, the successes and disappointments of the Olympic team, and the friendships formed during this mission. Josiah McCraken figures prominently as do his other teammates in this volume. The book includes hair cuttings, photographic prints, clippings, programs, written accounts, ribbons and other pieces of ephemera.
